The moraine landscape south of Munich is called the Fünfseenland. The "bourgeois" Ammersee is overshadowed by the "aristocratic" Starnberger See. Andechs Monastery, Herrsching and Dießen are the most famous places on the second largest lake in the region. The Ammersee was formed by a glacier tongue and is supplied with water by the Ammer. Both in the delta of the Ammer and in the reed area at the lake outlet, habitats for endangered bird species such as curlew, tern, kingfisher and plover have been created. These areas are under nature protection and are off-limits.
