Paddling tour, whitewater paddling: Loisach

The Loisach is a left tributary of the Isar with a length of around 122 kilometers. Between Ehrwald and Garmisch-Partenkirchen, the Loisach is the most famous whitewater in Germany and was the venue for a canoeing world championship. From Garmisch-Partenkirchen onwards, the raging white water turns into a fast-flowing hiking river in the shadow of the Wetterstein, Estergebirge and Ammergau mountains. The most beautiful section is between Farchant and the entrance to the Murnauer Moos. Much of the Loisach's temperament is lost in the idyllic Kochelsee. The water now usually flows more calmly, warmed to bathing lake temperature, towards the Isar and usually offers no more problems even for beginners.

What should I bear in mind when paddling the Loisach?

Best time: May to October, observe current riverbank access bans, sometimes strong currents and riverbed ramps with white water up to WW III in places, weirs, boat trolley required.
