The Isar rises in the Karwendel above Scharnitz. Canoeists usually launch their boats at the weir in Krün. Until 1990, this upper section of the Isar was mostly dry. New life was breathed into it through a compulsory water release. The natural stretch of the 1st stage to the Sylvenstein reservoir is a first-class gem. Our wild river meanders through a valley flanked by mountains. In the following stages, the Isar becomes a meandering wild river and becomes increasingly tamer and freer the closer it gets to Munich. The tour describes the navigation of sections 3, 4 and 5 of the Isar.

What should I bear in mind when paddling the Isar tour?

White water (WW), many weirs and tree obstructions, high risk of accidents due to changing current conditions, life jackets compulsory, solid boat control required, observe current navigation rules, observe water level, observe nature reserve. Best time: June to September.
