The Inn rises in the glacier regions of the Engadin and at its mouth is more watery than the Danube. As a salt trade route, the 517 kilometer long river was of particular importance in earlier times. The wealth acquired by the Inn's riparians and the almost Italianate architecture still characterize the image of towns such as Rosenheim, Wasserburg, Schärding and Passau. Rosenheim is a cradle of canoeing. Although some barrages hinder free travel, a paddling tour on this lonely stretch of water, which provides safe water even in dry summers, is worthwhile.
