In former times the salt boatmen transported their precious goods from Hallein in the Austrian Salzkammergut via Laufen to Passau. The wealth acquired in this way can still be seen in the towns along the Salzach. The pastel-colored houses in the old towns are built in the Inn-Salzach style, as are the oriels, most of which are decorated with stucco.
