Today, the Ruhr Valley is a green recreation area for the Rhine-Ruhr metropolitan region, and this tour introduces the upper reaches of the Ruhr in the Sauerland region before reaching the Ruhr area proper. The route surprises with some idyllic, renaturalized passages that you wouldn't necessarily expect to find on the Ruhr like this.
