Niers (Lower Rhine)

The Niers rises in Kuckum, a district of Erkelenz, and makes its way via Mönchengladbach to the mouth of the Maas near Gennep in the Netherlands, a good 100 km away. About 70 km are navigable by canoe, and although the course of the river has been straightened almost throughout, the Niers does have its charms. The banks are often flat, and where there is no row of poplars providing shade, the view can wander far across the Lower Rhine park and meadow landscape. In recent years, the course of the river has been renaturalized in several sections. Here the Niers, freed from its canal-like corset, can once again swing in wide bends.
