Niers (Lower Rhine)

The Niers has its source in Kuckum, a district of Erkelenz, and makes the 100 km journey via Mönchengladbach to its mouth in the Meuse near Gennep in the Netherlands. Around 70 km are navigable by canoe, and although the course of the river has been almost completely straightened, the Niers certainly has its charms. The banks are often flat and where there are no rows of poplars to provide shade, the view can wander far across the park and meadow landscape of the Lower Rhine. Several sections of the river have been renaturalized in recent years. Freed from its canal-like corset, the Niers can now swing in wide bends again.
