A lively weekend adventure on the Oker

From Schladen, it's 18 km along the natural course of the River Oker to Wolfenbüttel, initially with a brisk current and a few swells - after the weir in Ohrum, it becomes calmer and more tranquil. If you want to add another day, paddle on to Braunschweig on the second day.

The natural river Oker is impressively diverse, an insider tip for excursions and sports activities. It rises in the Upper Harz at an altitude of over 900 meters in the Bruchberg moors and flows into the Aller at Müden, almost 130 kilometers further on. From the Harz Mountains to the Heath, the Oker offers some superlatives. In the Harz Mountains, the Oker first feeds the Oker dam. This dam serves both to produce drinking water and to balance the water level of the Oker, which in earlier times caused significantly more flooding in the Harz foothills than is the case today. About twice a year, the locks of the dam are opened for whitewater paddling. Many people come from far and wide to the Harz Mountains to enjoy the spectacle.
