The last ice age is named after the Würm. The Celts settled along the Wirmina - the fast-flowing river. A small river with a great past. Legend has it that Charlemagne was born in the rice mill near Gauting. In terms of geology, wildlife and vegetation, the Würmtal is one of the most beautiful landscapes in the foothills of the Alps. Ash, alder and willow trees line the river, and kingfishers, grey wagtails, dippers, grass snakes and stoats have their habitat here. Even water irises and the rare arum can be found along the Würm. Although the canoe tour is only short, it offers plenty of variety with two different sections.
