Paddle tour: Upper Havel - from Lychen to Bredereiche

At the end of the 13th and beginning of the 14th century, a small village belonging to the Himmelpfort monastery was built at a ford over the Havel, which was still wild at the time and shaded by a mighty (breden) oak tree. The swift Havel water soon powered the grinder of a watermill, which was later expanded to include a cutting mill. As early as the mid-18th century, the torrent was tamed by the construction of sluices. These were soon too small. The lock in Bredereiche was renewed in 1894. Now larger cargo ships could also pass through the Havel and a skippers' guild settled in Bredereiche. Models of two barges can be admired in the village's half-timbered church. We first paddle across the large Lychensee lake, cross the Stolpsee lake in Himmelpfort and follow the Havel further south.
