The moraine landscape south of Munich is known as Fünfseenland. The "bourgeois" Ammersee is overshadowed by the "aristocratic" Starnberger See. Andechs Monastery, Herrsching and Dießen are the most famous places on the region's second largest lake. The Ammersee was formed by a glacier tongue and is supplied with water by the Ammer. Habitats for endangered bird species such as curlew, tern, kingfisher and plover have been created both in the delta of the Ammer and in the reed beds at the lake's outflow.
