The Inn has its source in the glacier regions of the Engadin and has more water at its mouth than the Danube. As a salt trade route, the 517-kilometre-long river was of particular importance in earlier times. The wealth acquired by the people living along the Inn still characterizes the image of towns such as Rosenheim and Passau today. Rosenheim is the cradle of canoeing. Although a few barrages hinder free passage, a canoe trip on this lonely stretch of water, which ensures safe water flow even in dry summers, is well worthwhile.
