Amazon of the North - this is the nickname given to the approximately 150-kilometre-long Peene, which unites several streams called Peene in the middle of the federal state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and flows into the Szczecin Lagoon near Anklam. Why is this modest little river compared to one of the most important rivers in the world? It was certainly not its length or the catchment area of its tributaries that inspired the name; nor is it surrounded by impenetrable jungle and, apart from the numerous mosquitoes and horseflies, there are no bloodthirsty animals to be found. However, the banks of the Peene are also impenetrable. Once you leave the few places along the river, you are surrounded by undisturbed nature after just a few meters.
