In the past, the Rheinsberg lakes were either isolated from each other or only connected by tiny streams. In order to meet the timber requirements of the glassworks in Zechliner Hütte, the streams were deepened and straightened in all four directions, making them navigable. By the end of the 19th century, further canals had been built and the Rheinsberg lakes were connected to the Müritz-Havel waterway. There is much to discover and experience along the described routes, both scenically and culturally. Sufficient time should therefore be planned to visit the Fontane and Tucholsky towns as well as the special features and beauty of the area.
