Spandau was one of the most important towns on the Havel before it was incorporated into Berlin. The citadel and Nikolai Church are among the most famous sights in Berlin. Two Italians brought the architectural style of the High Renaissance with them from their homeland and converted the old Spandau Castle into the "Spandau Citadel" fortress. The Nikolai Church, built around 1400, has a steeple that can be seen from afar. From its viewing platform, you have a sweeping view over the surrounding area of the Berlin Havel. The starting point for this canoe tour is the Bürgerablage campsite north of Spandau.
