Vattenvall AG has returned the Spree to its natural course between Döbbrick and Schmogrow and also renaturalized the Spree floodplains. The reason for these measures was not the energy giant's ecological awareness, but the requirement to compensate elsewhere for the transformation of the pond landscape near Lakoma into an open-cast mine. In the course of the construction work, six difficult to navigate sills were modified so that fish can pass them more easily. A canoe pass was created for canoeists. Some dykes were rebuilt far away from the river and a typical floodplain landscape was created by planting new willows and alders.
