The Werra

Multi-day tour, hiking trip, vacation trip: The Werra

There is a lot to experience on a multi-day canoe tour on the Werra. Initially flowing in a wide valley, it helps with salt extraction and absorbs salt. We marvel at the associated spoil tips. We continue on perfect loops through a partly enchanting low mountain range landscape, sometimes in the deeply incised valley of the Kaufunger Forest and past castles and palaces. The route starts in Hörschel and ends after approx. 116 km at the confluence with the Fulda in Hann.

Rising on the southern slopes of the Thuringian Forest near Eisfeld, the Werra, which is the eastern main source of the Weser, flows through a wide valley. Here it is pushed further and further north by the Vorderrhön. In the salt arch between Bad Salzungen and Mihla, the Werra water is enriched by potash salts, which have been extracted from the earth's interior here for centuries. In some places, spoil heaps can be seen from afar. The Werra then makes its way through the varied low mountain range landscape between the Hainich and the Schlierbach forest in many completed loops. Many castles and palaces accompany the Werra on its course in the always exposed border location between Hesse and Thuringia, and some old towns such as Meiningen, Creuzburg, Eschwege and Witzenhausen reflect their historic walls in the smoothly flowing water. Squeezed into a narrow, deeply incised valley by the steep slopes of the Kaufunger Forest, the Werra reaches the Fulda after almost 300 km of river to form the Weser together with it. Although the Werra is already navigable for two-person canoes from Meiningen, we only start at the canoe club campsite in Hörschel. The reason: 13 impassable weirs block the upper section of the river.
