Multi-day tour, hiking trip, vacation paddling: Fulda - the source of the Weser

This river hike of around 121 km from Bad Hersfeld to Hann. Münden is there to be enjoyed. The Fulda, which has its source in the Rhön, flows leisurely northwards in many loops and changing landscapes. Steep forest slopes accompany the course of the river for long stretches. Only near Kassel does the valley widen out like a basin.

The Fulda covers almost 180 km from its source at the Wasserkuppe in the Rhön to the Weserstein in Hann. As it winds its way northwards, it crosses the historic land between the Rhön and Vogelsberg mountains, linking the baroque episcopal town of Fulda with Bad Hersfeld, whose Romanesque collegiate church was the largest north of the Alps for centuries. At Bebra, the course of the river bends to the north-west to rush from the pretty residential town of Rotenburg through the narrows of Beiseförth to Melsungen in a lovely valley surrounded by steep forest slopes. After the large loop at Büchenwerra, the steep mountain slopes loosen their tight embrace and the Fulda, strengthened from the left by the clear waters of the Eder, enters the valley width of Kassel and cuts through the last foothills of the Kaufunger Forest to the north of this large town to create the Weser at the Weserstein in Hann. Münden through the famous "kiss" with the Werra.
