Eder

Multi-day tour, hiking trip, vacation paddling: Eder

The best starting point for a multi-day trip on the Eder is the launching point at the Eder bridge in Affoldern at km 43.5. It is approx. 41 km to the mouth of the Fulda at Grifte (Guntershausen). The boat can easily be portaged at all weirs. The Eder may be navigated on this stretch during the day from May to October if the water is at least 30 cm deep throughout. The general decree of the district president of Kassel applies.

In the contiguous forest area of the Rothaargebirge, not far from the sources of the Lahn and Sieg, the Eder, the Eilige, also sees the light of day in a mountain hollow on the slope of the almost 680m high Ederkopf. As a narrow stream, it flows through Erndtebrück and hops eastwards through a narrow valley, collecting the waters of the Wittgensteiner Land. After the last bends near Battenberg, it becomes a full-blown mid-mountain flufl, rushing along its stony bed to the old Hessian town of Frankenberg with its ten-towered town hall. From here, the Eder flows northwards through a wooded valley to Herzhausen to feed the 26 km long Eder reservoir, which winds like a narrow fjord between the green peaks of the Eder heights. Below the dam walls, not far from Bad Wildungen, the river reaches a fertile depression and greets the venerable cathedral town of Fritzlar as it flows past to the south. In the Wabern plain, the winding Schwalm is picked up at Altenburg. Passing Felsberg and the scenic Heiligenberg, leaving the beautiful Wolfershausen loop behind, the Eder unites its clear green waters with the dark floods of the Fulda.
