Weekend tour, hiking trip, vacation paddling: Diemel

The River Diemel is a good-flowing, sporty hiking flow that flows partly in a deeply incised and partly in a shallow valley through an incredibly attractive landscape. The water is clean and very rich. For our hike, we choose the scenic section of the river from Warburg to the mouth of the Weser, which is navigable all year round.

Just a few kilometers from its source on the northern slopes of the Kahler Pön in the Sauerland region, the Diemel, together with several smaller rivers, feeds the Diemel reservoir, which is picturesquely situated in the wreath of wooded hills and is now part of a nature park. Winding below the high dam wall in a deeply incised, secluded forest valley, it takes in the wild Hoppecke from the left, flows through the municipality of Marsberg, whose origins date back to at least the 8th century, before reaching the town of Warburg, which is dominated by the ruins of Desenberg Castle, visible from afar, in the flat, expansive western arch. A very attractive valley with forest and meadow slopes frames the further course of the river. In the shallow valley basin of Trendelburg, the flowing current eases somewhat. After flowing around the town, the Diemel cuts through the northern foothills of the Reinhardswald forest in wide loops before ending its own course as the left tributary of the Weser at Karlshafen.

What is important when paddling on the tour Diemel to consider?

Observe navigation rules, navigable all year round from Warburg with plastic boats, ground contact possible in summer. All weirs easy to portage, only double weir in Sielen difficult depending on water level, observe water level, not for beginners at high water.
