Varied hiking paddling: The Wied

The Wied crosses the tranquil Rhine-Westerwald Nature Park in sweeping loops, lined by steep erosion slopes and a primeval forest-like ravine. The varied, 46 km long section of the river from Oberlahr to Laubachsmühle (or Altwied) is ideal for canoeing. The Wied is mostly navigable here until the end of May and in the fall months.

This partly floating hiking float, nestled in a varied, charming valley, is usually used by single canoes until the end of May and then again in the fall - possibly also in the summer after periods of rain. However, if the water level is high enough (60 cm at the Döttesfeld / Seelbach gauge), two-person plastic boats, kayaks or canoes can also get through without any significant grounding. Folding boats are not recommended. Beginners, accompanied by experienced paddlers, will feel comfortable on the Wied, the water is predominantly shallow and the current conditions are predictable. All weirs and steps are navigable, except for the board weir in Roßbach and the Hausen weir, which are not always used, but we can also carry the boats around for a short time. Despite several campsites and some weekend cottages, it is very quiet in the valley. The water is clean. Car escort is possible along the entire route.
