A hiking river with a sporty character that requires boat control and experience. The fast current, the alternation of calm passages with challenging sections, natural steps, the clean water and the scenic attractions of a deeply incised, secluded valley make a trip down the Kyll an experience.

From its source in the Losheim Forest on the Belgian border, the Kyll, already known to the Romans for its abundance of fish, flows through almost the entire Eifel in a north-south dip to reach the Moselle not far from Trier near Ehrang after more than 140 km of river. The most scenic and, for us canoeists, most rewarding part is the wild and romantic section of the river between Gerolstein and Kordel. Here, the Kyll alternately digs deep into the layers of red sandstone and shell limestone. In many loops, repeatedly colliding with steep forest and rocky slopes, it seeks its way undeterred to the Moselle.

What is important when paddling on the tour Kyll to consider?

Take care with water levels above 100 cm at the Densborn gauge. Navigable well into early summer if the dry spells are not too long, and later after rainy days. Not recommended for collapsible boats, many weirs, navigable for plastic boats at medium water levels, portage around the steep weir below Densborn, tree obstacles possible.
