Kochel is proud of its folk hero "Schmid von Kochel", the leader of the Sendling peasant uprising. Lake Kochel is an ideal base camp thanks to its sights and spectacular surroundings. The extensive Loisach-Kochelsee moor stretches out to the north, the long ridge of the Benediktenwand stretches to the east and the Walchensee, the Mecca of windsurfing, beckons to the south. Fed by cold deep water from the Walchensee power station, the almost six square kilometer Kochelsee warms up to a modest 18 degrees in summer. Nevertheless, it is still a good place to swim in summer. And attractive paddling waters such as the Isar, Loisach, Ammer and Staffelsee are just a stone's throw away.
