South of the center of the Mecklenburg Lake District - Neubrandenburg - lies Lake Tollensesee, embedded in hilly beech forests, with the oldest protected area in Germany and the most beautiful circular cycle route in Mecklenburg. The route described begins with a circumnavigation of Lake Tollensesee by water and/or on land and an exploration of Neubrandenburg. The route then follows the Tollense, mostly lonely and far from the few villages, in 3 stages to its mouth in the Peene in Demmin.

Do not circumnavigate the lake in strong winds. Always heed weather warnings. In late summer, when the Tollense is mowed and then temporarily closed in places, it may be difficult to enter and exit the lake.
